For Benjamin Damazo, MD, otolaryngology is “a field that involves diverse and unique anatomy with treatment that incorporates both medical management and procedural-based endeavors that’s applicable for all patient demographics.”
This combination of elements creates what Dr. Damazo describes as a “mentally stimulating” specialty that allows for comprehensive ENT and patient care.
A Passion for Vocal Health
Since joining The ENT & Allergy Centers of Texas, Dr. Damazo has established expertise in treating voice disorders, applying the specialized training he gained during his fellowship in Laryngology at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. His journey to becoming a voice specialist began in the small town of Paradise, California, where his early passions for swimming and medicine laid the foundation for his career.
“From a young age, my first passion has been swimming,” shares Dr. Damazo, who competed through high school and college as a Division 1 athlete, setting several records while maintaining his academic standing. His discipline transferred seamlessly to medical school at Loma Linda University School of Medicine, where he melded his passion for the water and volunteer work teaching inner city children how to swim and basic water safety by founding the TIGERS water safety swim camp. He also became the inaugural editor-in-chief of the Loma Linda University Student Journal.
It was during medical school that Benjamin Damazo, MD, met an influential mentor. “My faculty mentor throughout this process, Dr. Jared Inman, was an otolaryngologist and helped me discover the wonders and joy of ENT. He introduced me to the varied nature of the specialty as well as its ability to take care of a wide range of patients both medically and surgically.”
Comprehensive ENT Care: From Diagnosis to Recovery
The path to Laryngology specialization became clear during his residence at Loma Linda. “During residency, I was introduced to the wonderful Drs. Priya Krishna and Brianna Crawley. They helped me discover how taking care of patients who have disorders of the voice, esophagus, and airway are not only interesting but is also very rewarding,” Dr. Damazo recalls. This experience inspired his fellowship training in Laryngology, where he “had the distinct privilege of working with Drs. Seth Dailey, David Francis, and Timothy McCulloch, who taught [him] how to take excellent care of the larynx.”
When asked about professional challenges, he emphasizes a commitment to “continue to try and find new ways to optimize patient safety in and out of the operating room and find new and innovative ways to improve patient care.” Beyond Laryngology, Dr. Damazo maintains an enthusiasm for sports medicine. Affiliated with USA Boxing as a physician, he served as a ringside physician at the California State Amateur Boxing Championship in 2022.
What drives this level of commitment? “The love and support from my family serves as a powerful motivation,” Dr. Damazo explains. “They fuel my dedication to my work as a doctor and inspire me to treat each patient encounter as though I am treating a family member.”
